Earrings inspired by beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand's native birds.
Embrace the beauty of New Zealand's native birds with these stylish and sustainable earrings. As seen on our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern - Remix Plastic have chosen the tragedy of the extinction of the Huia* to tell of the unintended consequences that can arise when sustainable practices aren’t integrated into our desire for new things.
Please be aware that the Huia Feathers have two designs:
Remix Plastic are excited to have recently updated the design of the huia feather earrings to allow them to scale up to fulfil demand. While the original design was black and white plastic melted together, the challenges of running out of white plastic has led to making earrings in a new design that are black with painted white tips. They are still 100% recycled plastic, and the process is as environmentally friendly as possible. Read on for more information about the process of making the original design Huia Feathers. Made from PLA (3D printer waste).
Saddleback/Tīeke Feather:
The Tīeke is one of the most recognisable bird species in New Zealand due to its bold plumage markings, loud vocalisations and distinctive orange-red wattles. Saddlebacks are in the endemic New Zealand ‘wattlebird’ family (Callaeidae), along with kokako and the extinct huia. These dual feather earrings are made from gold and black ice cream container lids and drape over one another like the tail feathers of the Saddleback.
Bamboo Feathers:
When Remix Plastic was presented with some bamboo that was destined for landfill, they decided to add this gorgeous wooden feather to their popular range.
Pīwakawaka (Fantail) Feather Earrings:
With their distinct chirps and black and white tail feathers, the Pīwakawaka's friendly antics make them a favourite of many Kiwis. Made up of black and white pieces laser cut from ice cream container lids, these earrings are pinned together with a silver-plated handmade staple. Made from polypropylene (PP) ice cream container lids. Remix Plastic created these earrings on the 1st anniversary of New Zealand's first level 4 lockdown as a way to celebrate the friendliness and resilience of Kiwis with a feather from a friendly and resilient bird.
Flocking Bird Earrings:
Bring a touch of nature to your style with the stunning flocking bird earrings, made from recycled ice cream container lids. These earrings feature intricate laser cut designs of kererū and gulls flocking against a golden cloud background.
Sustainable Style:
The recycled plastic products that Remix Plastic make are not simply fashion items but are a vehicle to empower people to make sustainable changes, whether big or small. With locally collected waste they create products that have a sustainable story - this not only diverts waste from landfill but also provides a way to engage people in a conversation around reducing single use plastic. A reminder of what we can achieve for each other and for our wildlife when we all work together.
These earrings have been created as part of Remix Plastic’s sustainability education programme. Remix Plastic educates about all aspects of responsible consumption and production including fast fashion.
